Ephesians 6:17

King James Version

17 And take the helmet of salvation, 

and the sword of the Spirit, 

which is the word of God:

Why is the WORD of GOD likened to a sword?

In the first verse, it says it is the "sword of the Spirit".

Who is "Spirit"?

John 14:16-17

King James Version

16 And I will pray the Father, 

and he shall give you another Comforter, 

that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; 

whom the world cannot receive, 

because it seeth him not, 

neither knoweth him: 

but ye know him; 

for he dwelleth with you, 

and shall be in you.

In another verse, it says the WORD of GOD is "sharper than any twoedged sword"

Hebrews 4:12

King James Version

12 For the word of God is quick, 

and powerful, 

and sharper than any twoedged sword, 

piercing even to the dividing asunder 

of soul and spirit, 

and of the joints and marrow, 

and is a discerner of the thoughts 

and intents of the heart.

What does the WORD and sword have to do with JESUS?

The Book of Revelation speaks of JESUS this way:

Revelation 1:16

King James Version

16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: 

and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: 

and his countenance was as the sun shineth 

in his strength.

Revelation 2:12

King James Version

12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; 

These things saith he 

which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

Revelation 2:16

King James Version

16 Repent; 

or else I will come unto thee quickly, 

and will fight against them 

with the sword of my mouth.

Revelation 19:13-15

King James Version

13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: 

and his name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which were in heaven 

followed him upon white horses, 

clothed in fine linen, 

white and clean.

15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, 

that with it he should smite the nations: 

and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: 

and he treadeth the winepress 

of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Again, we turn back to our original question.

"Why is the WORD of GOD likened to a sword?"

For this simple reason:

Ephesians 6:12

King James Version

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, 

but against principalities, 

against powers, 

against the rulers of the darkness of this world, 

against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We need the SPIRIT of GOD, through His WORD -- JESUS -- to conquer evil.

Now you see how POWERFUL the WORD of GOD is.

JESUS just needs to speak things into being.

Psalm 33:9

King James Version

9 For he spake, and it was done; 

he commanded, and it stood fast.
